During a midday solstice walk, I contemplated the irony of December 21st. The whole of winter, with its freezing temperatures and stormy weather, is ahead of us. Yet, having passed the point of maximum darkness, we can look forward to a daily increase in light. The hour exemplifies a fact of life: hardship and relief are forever tantamount.
